How Headstones Are Made!

The Process

The Process For Making Headstones Involves Many Different Steps. Such As Getting The Desired Slab Either Cut Our Selves Or Bought In, Cutting That Slab Into The Size Of The Headstone & Base, Milling It To Get The Shape, Polishing It, Punching If Required And Finally Drilling Holes In The Bottom To Be Fitted.

Getting The Slab

The Common Sizes For Headstones Are 3" Or 4", So We Commonly Get Slabs Of That Size Bought In, Unless The Customer Doesn't Require Granite From A Specific Quarry, So We Cut Our Own Granite Up. The Slabs We Use Are At The Best Quality, As They Don't Have Any Faults In!

CUTTING THE SLAB TO SIZE

Once We Have Chosen The Slab Of The Desired Thickness, We Then Take The Slab Onto Our Small Bridge Saw To Be Cut To Size In A Square. Depending On The Shape, We Will Then Proceed To Do More Cuts, Such As Cutting The Corners Off The Top Of An Ogee Headstone.

Milling to get the shape

When The Slab Is All Sawn And Ready, It Gets Put Onto The Milling Machine To Get The Curved Shape. This Machine Makes Life A Massive Amount Easier To Get The Specific Shapes Required, And Stops A Lot Of Dust Blowing In The Air.

Polishing

At This Stage, The Headstone Will Start To Look Something Like It. We Use Our Big Polishing Machine To Rub And Polish The Main Faces, And Use Our Smaller Hand Polishing Machine To Do The Edge Faces. Common Finishes At This Stage Are Honed, Part Polished & Full Polished.

Some Customers Prefer To Have A Hand Punched Finish On The Back And Sides, So We Wouldn't Polish Or Rub These Faces.

Drill holes & lettering

The Final Step For Us Is To Put Drill Holes In The Bottom Of The Headstone And Base To Be Fitted. The Machine We Use for This Is A Big Pillar Drill. This Provides Accuracy In Hole Straightness And Depth.

After All This, The Headstone Is Able To Be Palleted Up And Sent Off To Be Lettered By Our High Quality, Trusted Letterer.
